Czech Easter: treats for whipping

The Czech Republic is not very religious country. We are likely the most atheist country in Europe. However, we still do celebrate both, Christmas and Easter. Pretty much. In a civil way as we like traditions and feasting.

Whip, ouch

In a nutshell, Czech Easter is about celebrating forthcoming spring and a new life. We have various customs and celebrate them in different ways. The funniest one is however whipping girls and women with fresh, braided willow rods, we call it "pomlázka" (whip). See bellow:)

Yep, this is pomlázka in a giant size. You need enough space around to use it properly. The size is threatening itself. If you prefer quick (malicious:) whipping, use a smaller one. Pocket size. I like this picture with some red-blood paint in a back, haha, it seems like he did a good job.

Why we do it?

It is a tradition - only on Easter Monday morning. Guys are whipping, girls are suffering. Simple as it is. The word "pomlázka" comes from "pomladit" meaning “to make younger." So we rather stand the pain and wait for a miracle:) And that´s how it goes every year.

Reward
Wait, guys are also rewarded for whipping us. We say "thank you" and offer them shots of liquor, painted eggs, sweets...

This was my Easter morning. I was getting up when my boyfriend showed up with his giant whip and cute basket. No mercy.
