There are several ways how to name city trains. In Prague we say METRO. Underground or subway is basically metro here. This is a word that even non-English speaking people do understand and can point you in the right direction.
There are 3 lines in operation. Green (A), yellow (B) and red (C). Locals only say A, B or C and make fun of those who call lines by colors or call it "mole". That´s how we notice non-residents and visitors. Local joke. No offence.
Prague metro began operation in May 1974 and was built in the heavy Soviet style. Old trains can still be seen on B line (yellow) and A line (green). C line is yet operated by modern trains.
Most of the time the trains go underground. 4x you go under river water, 1x you will be in the air while train is running through 42m high Nusle bridge (between I.P.Pavlova and Vyšehrad stations). Metro operates daily from 05:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (at 12:00 pm trains leave terminal stations for their last ride).
Albeit some metro stations look like halls for funeral services (in comparison with Berlin U-Bahn or Stockholm T-Bana), we love metro. It is the easiest and fastest way how to get around. Moreover, in summer it is refreshing to go underground to cool down or warm up there in winter. Local metro is kept in shape, clean and without urine odour.
Escalators - hot tip: please, try to avoid standing on a left side of the stairs. Please, please. Left side is a fast track for those who walk up! In case there are crowds, no worries, it is ok to stand next to each other.
Link worth adding to bookmarks: fares (inspectors are strict, fast and never come alone...)
